Guide to Hand Spinning


In the Hand Spinning process, the roller is controlled by a person rather than by a machine. Hand Spinning is used for jobs with low volumes and lighter metals.

Set-Up
The material, in the form of a circular blank, is centered on the chuck.

Below is the bottom arm of the "scissor tool" which provides greater leverage for the roller.


Forming Begins
The material begins to take on the shape of the chuck, as the roller is pressed up against the material while the lathe is spinning.


Forming Continues
Formation of the material is now about 75% complete.

Below is a detailed view of the roller pressed against the material.


Forming Completed
The material has now taken on the shape of the chuck.

Below, the material has been removed from the lathe.
